EVENT FRAMING: Presentation Setup & Statements About the Event
To note: the extravagant stage setup, large portrait of L. Ron Hubbard, the size of the crowd, Scientology celebrities in the front row… What is the intention, the intended IMPRESSION on the viewers behind such presentation setup?
concept { FRAMING }
“In essence, framing theory suggests that how something is presented to the audience (called “the frame”) influences the choices people make about how to process that information. Frames are abstractions that work to organize or structure message meaning. The most common use of frames is in terms of the frame the news or media place on the information they convey. They are thought to influence the perception of the news by the audience… – they not only tell the audience WHAT to think about, but also HOW to think about that issue.”

KEEPING SCIENTOLOGY WORKING (KSW)
What David Miscavige said ABOUT KSW [in 2007]:
…take Keeping Scientology Working – it’s all but impossible without tonight’s release.
By this what he is also saying is that the Founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, was not successful in delivering Scientology to the masses when he was actually producing the materials of Dianetics and Scientology, personally delivering courses, developing training programs and building the INTERNATIONAL structure of the organization. According to David Miscavige, Scientology basically did not exist prior to 2007 release of the “Basics” since, according to his words, Keeping Scientology Working was all by IMPOSSIBLE without the new “Basics.”
What L. Ron Hubbard said IN KSW [in 1965 and 1970]
(PDF / source: OEC Vol 0, First Printing 1974 ISBN: 0-88404-025-9):
The note above directly relates to a major “Golden Age” PUBLICATIONS PROJECT led directly by L. Ron Hubbard through the mid 1970’s featuring the release of the OEC Volumes [1974] and the Admin Dictionary [1976], the Tech Bulletins Volumes [1976] and the Tech Dictionary [1975], the Volunteer Minister’s Handbook [1976], What is Scientology? [1978] and numerous other publications. This project included standardizing publication format for all of the original books now included in the “Basics,” in addition to other books that were dropped out of publication all together under the leadership of David Miscavige. You can see detailed information for all of these publications at www.trueLRH.com. As a side note, in 1969 Ron Hubbard noted on the problem of the scarcity of materials in HCOB 11 JUNE 1969 MATERIALS, SCARCITY OF. It seems a major publications project immediately following this HCOB was designed to handle this very problem. |
ESTABLISHING A LOGICAL CONNECTION:
LOST TECH >< having a BLANK due to MISUNDERSTOOD WORDS
Symbol ‘><‘ means a connection, or relation, between two things (concepts, ideas, principles, etc.).
It is a new symbolic annotation introduced as part of the analytical framework utilized in this report.
So first David Miscavige established a logical connection between an idea of LOST TECH and an idea of having a BLANK due to MISUNDERSTOOD WORDS – a known principle among Scientologists which is a part of Ron Hubbard’s study methodology. Then he proceeds, eventually, to connect the two above with a KEY CLAIM that the text for all the books, except one, was dictated by LRH and typed by a “TRANSCRIPTIONIST” who basically messed it up in all kinds of different ways.
KEY CLAIM & Presentation of “The Basics”
working principle: (made up) PROBLEM -> (made up) SOLUTION
A Check for LOGICAL REALISM
So according to David Miscavige, Ron Hubbard DICTATED a book (every book in the set, except one); then a transcriptionist messed up typing it up, and so it came out altered and distorted; and, we have to assume, it stayed that way – for some 30 years! – all through Ron Hubbard’s days of actively developing Scientology practice and its organizational structure.
Technically, it is possible, or at least we could say – not totally unrealistic – and there is a clear logic of one factor leading to the next: altered text > leading to misunderstoods > leading to basically confusion, non-comprehension and missing information or incorrect information > leading to lost tech – since DIRECT COMMUNICATION from the Founder of the technology was no longer carrying through.
But the first question that comes to mind in this whole incredible story is WHERE WAS RON HUBBARD?
Was there no review process?
Did Ron Hubbard not look at his own books to make sure that it was exactly what he wanted? If he utilized an outside publisher for some of his early books, would Hubbard not be presented with the pre-production version of his book to get his approval before mass production and release of the book into the public? Did Hubbard never look at his books after they were published? Wasn’t he using them as textbooks for his courses? If there were dictations and a “transcriptionist” who would type it up, was there no direct line of communication to Hubbard to ask him to clarify any areas of confusion? Were people so unprofessional in the book publishing business? Was there no standard protocol – a logical process – for how book publishing occurred?
Did Ron Hubbard really dictate the books?
What would be the point of making dictations which, especially in the days before personal computers, would be a very daunting task? What if you wanted to make some corrections to what you recorded? Just the logistics of it – seems highly IMPROBABLE, UNREALISTIC, and NOT LOGICAL from the viewpoint of such a course of actions from Hubbard. It seems like it would be faaaaaaaar easier to just type things up on PAPER. That way, you can easily separate things into sections, you can easily make corrections; you can easily toss selected papers if you wanted to introduce a major change to a given section of text; you can type up additional pages, if you wanted to expand on some chapters or some sections of text.
Why not just type or write it up instead of producing dictations?
It would be far easier as a writer to work with paper and a type writer, as well as just writing things down by hand, as opposed to dealing with tape recordings. We could suppose that Hubbard would create a book on paper, then produce dictations and give it to a transcriptionist to type up… Why in the world would Hubbard do that?! if he could just simply give his ready manuscript, with notes and corrections, if needed. Then there is the question of organization of text in terms of paragraphs, sections, chapters… and punctuation – these are very important aspects of producing comprehensible communication. How would you go about providing such information through a dictation? Even by today’s standards, it seems like it would be so much UNNECESSARY WORK to produce dictations for book publishing.
Then, apart from Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and Science of Survival, other books are actually relatively small and were compiled using smaller issues that were produced over time and then assembled into a book. This applies to Scientology: A History of Man, Scientology 8-80, Scientology 8-8008, The Fundamentals of Thought, A New Slant on Life… – that could may as well be all of them. In other words, taking into account the content structure of the books themselves – if a book consisted of a set of previously produced smaller issues, how would that align with “dictations?” There were separate dictations for every separate segment of the book? Where would Hubbard keep such dictations for different issues and why? Why not just deal with PAPER, especially in light of the fact that Hubbard was a skilled typist himself due to his prior book publishing career as a pulp fiction writer?
Finding and Evaluating EVIDENCE
There is not even a need to be guessing around because there is an OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF EVIDENCE OF RON HUBBARD’S DIRECT INVOLVEMENT in not just creating his own books but obviously in creating the whole of Scientology. How could it be any other way?

Original Technical Bulletin Volumes provide a very detailed and professional description of every book and some include information on how the book was created. None of them say anything about “dictations.” Quite to the contrary, some even specify that it was “written” or even “typed” by L. Ron Hubbard.
It is very logical to assume that Church staff consulted L. Ron Hubbard directly in compiling these descriptions in the early 1970’s (before the release of the Tech Volumes) especially where more specific information was provided in the story of how the book was produced. Otherwise, where would they get such information to put in the description in the first place? If some books were dictated and then transcribed, SURELY! such information would be communicated somewhere in the original descriptions or elsewhere in the volumes [large amount] of Scientology materials, but so far it is nowhere to be found.
And here is a true gem of this analysis – a selection from one of Hubbard’s lectures where he is looking through different books during a lecture:

Extended Analysis
By simply making up some story about a “transcriptionist,” David Miscavige effectively removed L. Ron Hubbard (in the minds of Scientologists and the public) as a direct source of his own published works.
